수학은 어떻게 문명을 만들었을까
2000년 전보다 지금 사람들의 머리가 더 좋을까?
현생 인류의 종인 호모 사피엔스는 약 30만 년 전 유전적 변이로 인해 이 세상에 나타났다. 그리고 인류의 다른 종들과 경쟁에서 유일하게 살아남았다.
인류는 진화하고 있다. 유전적 변이도 계속되고 있다. 다만 자연선택은 매우 느려졌다. 좋은 주거환경과 의료시스템, 효율적인 사회구조로 인해 자연이 인류에 개입할 여지가 줄어들었기 때문이다.
2000년 전보다 지금 사람들의 선천적 지능이 더 좋아졌다고 말하기는 어렵다. 그럼 오늘날 내가 2000년 전 사람들보다 훨씬 윤택하게 살 수 있는 이유는 무엇일까. 이 책을 읽고 나니 문자와 수학 덕분이라는 생각이 들었다.
사람의 두뇌는 뛰어난 연산처리능력을 가졌지만 데이터를 저장하고 타인과 전송하는데는 영 적합하지 못하다. 방금 하던 일도 누가 부르면 깜빡 잊어버리고 내가 전하려던 이야기는 입 밖으로 내뱉어지는 순간 오해를 불러일으키지 않던가. 문자는 그 점을 완벽히 보완해 주는 도구다. 잊히고 본의가 왜곡되지 않도록 의미의 원 형태를 유지한다.
한편 수학은 두뇌의 연산처리시간을 대폭 줄여주었다. 머릿 속 생각만으로는 너무 힘들거나 오래 걸렸던 일들을 빠르게 해결할 수 있도록 도왔다. 경작지를 공평하게 나눌 때 말뚝과 줄을 활용한 기하학이 사용된 것처럼 말이다. 단순한 사건을 해결하기 위해 사용되던 수학은 세월이 지나면서 당연한 지식으로 변모됐다. 그리고 골똘히 생각하기를 좋아했던 몇몇 사람들에 의해 어떤 조건에서는 어떤 결과가 산출된다는 법칙이 등장했다. 그 법칙 덕분에 후대의 사람들은 법칙을 산출하기 위해 겪어야 했던 수많은 시행착오를 건너뛸 수 있었다.
사람은 시공간 안에서 제한된 삶을 살아가는데 문자와 수학이 그것을 해소해준 것이다.
나중에 우리 아이가 수학을 공부하게 되면, 이 책을 다시 펴야겠다고 생각했다.

Humans are continuously evolving, and genetic mutations are still occurring, although at a slower rate due to the improved living environment, medical system, and efficient social structure.
It's difficult to say whether human intelligence is greater now than it was 2000 years ago. However, What is the reason for the improvements in our quality of life today? It can be attributed to the advancements in language and mathematics.
The human brain has excellent processing power, but it is not ideal for storing and transmitting data to others. For example, we may forget something we were just doing when someone calls us, and what we say often leads to misunderstandings. Language solves this issue by preserving the original intention of the message, preventing distortion and forgetting.
Mathematics, on the other hand, helps to reduce the processing time required by the brain to solve problems. It is used to solve problems quickly, and over the years, it has transformed into knowledge that is taken for granted. Laws were developed by people who pondered why certain conditions produce certain results, allowing future generations to skip the trial and error process.
Language and mathematics have helped to overcome the limitations of our limited lives in time and space.
When my children study math, I will read this book to them again.
